{"id":71,"date":"2020-08-27T20:13:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T20:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imitone.com\/blog\/?p=71"},"modified":"2023-09-13T23:55:13","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T23:55:13","slug":"metamorphosis-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imitone.com\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/08\/27\/metamorphosis-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"metamorphosis 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>This post was transcribed from the imitone Kickstarter blog. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/evanbalster\/imitone-mind-to-melody\/posts\/2928713\">Click here to view the original post<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since January, and through the chaos of 2020, I have been making radical changes to the way I do things. &nbsp;Or rather, how&nbsp;<em>we<\/em>&nbsp;do things \u2014 this year&#8217;s biggest development is that imitone&#8217;s day-to-day team has grown from one to four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been one of the busiest periods of my life, and I can&#8217;t hope to summarize it in a single post. &nbsp;Instead, I&#8217;ll give a quick overview of the year&#8217;s developments. &nbsp;I&#8217;ll have more to say about each topic in future updates \u2014 from here on, I&#8217;m aiming to write small updates about twice each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h:the-team\">The Team<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>imitone&#8217;s day-to-day team is now four people plus two consultants. &nbsp;We are distributed, but three team members (including myself) are in the Seattle area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/344\/427\/6d5042c80103b4e7bc6173ce630dc39f_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598403563&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=2c745a029788200518bc41ed87c3d16b\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Evan Balster<\/strong>&nbsp;(he\/him) \u2014 team lead, research &amp; Carroll<\/strong>&nbsp;(they\/them) \u2014 Evan&#8217;s apprentice, research &amp; development, community support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lou is a software developer and generalist with a background in voice resynthesis technology &#8220;UTAU&#8221;. &nbsp;They are learning to develop audio applications with a focus on manipulating the human voice and will be helping with various aspects of imitone development and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Internet lizard, jack of all trades and trainer of singing robots.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/344\/458\/b8a999ab2f02a8bf285f67278df6dc0c_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598403802&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=4849b0bcacf310379196a6059cb25d42\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Isaac Schankler<\/strong>&nbsp;(they\/them) \u2014 consulting music researcher<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isaac is a videogame composer and professor of music. &nbsp;They are helping us to interface with experts in musical traditions around the world, and to build a datamodel for supporting those traditions in imitone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;If my life was a tarot deck, the suits would be cats, babies, synthesizers and accordions.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h:projects\">Projects<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>imitone<\/strong>: &nbsp;Our main project, obviously! &nbsp;imitone is a voice-to-MIDI application in development for PC, Mac and plugin systems, which will eventually grow to Linux and mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/357\/756\/5d10864884e2ecfb80c56906b4d81259_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598480851&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=84205e8e59020a556c510ca17f0967db\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>imitone team members brandish kazoos in the opening hours of NAMM 2020.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Team<\/strong>: &nbsp;My biggest project of 2020 has been growing the imitone team, which involves starting a few new projects as well as delegating some of my own responsibilities so I&#8217;m not spread so thin. &nbsp;This is a&nbsp;<em>huge<\/em>&nbsp;time investment, but after seven years working alone I&#8217;ve come to respect my limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NAMM<\/strong>: &nbsp;The world&#8217;s largest music tech convention. &nbsp;We had a delightful showing in January 2020, debuting our new technology and winning an innovation award. &nbsp;We will not be attending in 2021. &nbsp;\ud83d\ude37<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technology<\/strong>: &nbsp;Research and development into imitone&#8217;s voice pitch recognition and music transcription technology. &nbsp;This has been the subject of several previous updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/357\/656\/9013385186701930b217ce100c90f1ad_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598480202&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=dbf0ed2e6d69d0af77185c19c1c00098\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>A snapshot of our research tools, depicting the &#8220;forest&#8221; of musical harmonies imitone must navigate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Community<\/strong>: &nbsp;The team is interested in making imitone development into a community-oriented process involving activities like modding and MIDI scripting. &nbsp;We&#8217;ll have more to say about this later!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tutorials<\/strong>: &nbsp;A series of imitone tutorial videos which will eventually detail how to set up and use imitone with various music-making apps, how to get the best results with it, various musical recipes and more. &nbsp;See our library: &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/c\/imitone_team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">youtube.com\/c\/imitone_team<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>MIDI 2.0<\/strong>: &nbsp;imitone uses MIDI to control musical instruments. &nbsp;The next-generation MIDI 2.0 standard is more precise and will allow imitone to automatically learn about and adapt to the instruments you play. &nbsp;It is developed by an industry association that holds several meetings each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/357\/535\/5e4b14ac77db9cff9db762d24345a80a_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598479585&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=10200d8398d839ebf7a641a71dbc011d\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The MIDI Manufacturers Association and Association of Musical Electronics Industry celebrate the publishing of the MIDI 2.0 Core Specifications.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Music Modeling<\/strong>: &nbsp;Research into scales, tuning systems and musical traditions from around the world, how to model them, and better ways to transcribe singing into musical scores. &nbsp;A collaboration with professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/isaacschankler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaac Schankler<\/a>&nbsp;and a growing list of tradition experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sandvox<\/strong>: &nbsp;Working title for Lou&#8217;s apprenticeship project, a moddable freeware speech training and research application with an emphasis on gender expression. &nbsp;It will use imitone technology to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-EtLzXRnx7s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visualize the user&#8217;s voice<\/a>&nbsp;and facilitate creating and sharing voice lessons. &nbsp;(Thanks to Dr. Alex Ahmed of Project Spectra community for research and resources.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SoundSelf<\/strong>: &nbsp;An eight-year collaboration with sound designer Robin Arnott. &nbsp;It harmonizes with the pitch of your voice and the rhythm of your breath to produce a shifting visual soundscape that guides the user into a deep and meditative trance. &nbsp;It may be played with a VR headset or on an ordinary screen. &nbsp;It was released in April 2020 and continues to evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vQW-ctfvLPE\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;A free trial is available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundself.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soundself.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h:2020-at-a-glance\">2020 at a glance<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>January<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<strong>Technology<\/strong>: &nbsp;Concluded Stage 4 of imitone R&amp;D.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>imitone<\/strong>: &nbsp;Released version 0.10 with a preview of our new pitch-tracking technology.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>NAMM<\/strong>: &nbsp;Exhibited imitone at NAMM 2020&#8217;s MIDI showcase with Elizabeth and Lou.<\/li><li>\ud83c\udf1f imitone was named School Band &amp; Krishna Chetan about North &amp; South Indian traditions.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>Community<\/strong>: Assigned Lou to develop a modding technology, called &#8220;mutant&#8221;.<br>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<strong>imitone<\/strong>: Began work on a major rewrite of imitone&#8217;s code aimed at supporting moddability, VST plugins, mobile apps, background processing and eliminating development roadblocks.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>SoundSelf<\/strong>: Integrated and released Lou&#8217;s modding technology.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>Sandvox<\/strong>: Consulted with Dr. Alex Ahmed about designing voice training technologies.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>MIDI 2.0<\/strong>: Gave a presentation about MIDI 2.0 to Audio Game Jam attendees.<\/li><li>\ud83c\udf1f&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zoyastreet.wordpress.com\/2020\/08\/06\/high-fidelity-emotional-tools-on-soundcloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I was interviewed<\/a>&nbsp;by Zoyander Street as part of a piece about emotive technologies.<br>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>August<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<strong>Technology<\/strong>: Completed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-EtLzXRnx7s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a research prototype<\/a>&nbsp;for visualizing voice shape in real-time.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>imitone<\/strong>: Began work on a MIDI scripting feature.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>Community<\/strong>: Began work on a manual for imitone scripting.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>Tutorials<\/strong>: Released our first new tutorial, about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NI-dvdinTzk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sound Clarity<\/a>.<\/li><li>&nbsp;<strong>Tutorials<\/strong>: Filmed new DAW setup tutorials.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/344\/480\/93a2c6efb7f41f59869af516ea115c7f_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598403943&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=96354b0d983c61e23c3305329de47f98\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;My work logs provide a bird&#8217;s-eye view of how projects have competed for my time over these months: &nbsp;imitone is orange, SoundSelf is purple, MIDI 2.0 standards are gold, while Sandvox and phonology research appear in pink. &nbsp;A few other company and personal projects appear here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we&#8217;re building toward is something I&#8217;ve tried and failed to achieve several times as a solo developer: &nbsp;regular, substantial updates developed in active conversation with a community of imitone users. &nbsp;Previous attempts at this were only sustainable for three to eight weeks at a time, usually related to public showings, and contributed to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technical_debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technical debt<\/a>&nbsp;which we&#8217;re now working to undo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technology<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Music Modeling<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>MIDI 2.0<\/strong>&nbsp;give us a basis for features and improvements to imitone \u2014 putting them together creates a roadmap for the next stange of development. &nbsp;Side projects&nbsp;<strong>Sandvox<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>SoundSelf<\/strong>&nbsp;provide opportunities to explore new possibilities for the tech, which often lead back to improvements in imitone. &nbsp;<strong>Tutorials<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Community<\/strong>&nbsp;building make the app easier to use and drive sales which fund the&nbsp;<strong>Team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h:a-word-on-overwork\">A Word on Overwork<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Since late October I have consistently worked 6-day or even 7-day weeks without vacations, to the detriment of my health. &nbsp;As of this month I&#8217;m attempting to adopt a 5\u00bd day week, and while writing this article I decided to attempt a few days of much-needed time off, with mixed success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no glory in overwork. &nbsp;It&#8217;s not a behavior to emulate, and it is remarkable that I have been able to maintain a baseline level of productivity so far. &nbsp;It certainly wouldn&#8217;t have been possible to do so without members of the team reminding me regularly to pace myself, and compensating for some of the short-sighted decisions I tend to make when I&#8217;m doing this to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effects of overwork range from the obvious fatigue, to a lack of foresight or hindsight, and into stranger things: &nbsp;for example, forgetting how to do things you once enjoyed \u2014 or doing them joylessly, as tasks. &nbsp;It is true on many levels that we become what we do&#8230; &nbsp;If what we do is a means to an end, then we become the means, and the end becomes distant until it&#8217;s almost forgotten. &nbsp;We become that endlessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ksr-ugc.imgix.net\/assets\/030\/357\/829\/e71f511ccba7e8ca2263d93e728b9ff6_original.png?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&amp;w=700&amp;fit=max&amp;v=1598481284&amp;gif-q=50&amp;lossless=true&amp;s=aefa838753b13093334069c992e513b2\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ordinarily I take a few opportunities each year to step away from my work and attend creative gatherings. &nbsp;Since March that has ceased to be an option \u2014 with good reason. &nbsp;One such event, a game writers&#8217;
