Description

Transform your voice into any instrument. imitone team is developing a new way to play and compose music. Our goal is to create the "ultimate first instrument", by combining the natural expressiveness of human voice with our advanced pitch-tracking technology. Along the way, we're creating a powerful tool for trained singers and professional musicians.

History

2012-2014

After years of failed experiments Evan invented the "self-attuning resonator" in 2014. He teamed up with Richard Hogg to create imitone's visual language. imitone Kickstarted with 2,500 backers, who began using it a month later.

2015-2016

imitone appeared at the 2015 NAMM show as a six-piece band, where it drew much attention. Afterwards, Evan realized that the technology needed to work as well in a beginner's hands as it did on the showfloor. Citing a 30-year history of disappointing pitch-to-MIDI tech, he began a long and quiet research process.

2017-2018

Evan continued developing imitone's tech, envisioning an affirming experience for musical beginners. imitone joined the MIDI Manufacturers' Association to work on new music standards, and was among the first companies to prototype with MIDI 2.0.

2019-2020

Evan traveled the USA in a motor home, recruiting new members to the imitone team and building a next-generation technology powered by statistics. The new team and tech debuted at NAMM 2020, where imitone's new ability to track rapid singing was put to the test.

Awards & Recognition

  • "Most Innovative Teaching Tool of 2020, School Band & Orchestra" - Awarded by a panel of teachers at NAMM 2020

Selected Articles

  • " The person I keep in mind is the reluctant beginner. If the software makes a mistake — plays a sour note — they might internalize that. I've seen it time and time again. They think, "that's because I'm not cut out for this." Other pitch-tracking technologies have been making these mistakes for decades, and they were marketed to pros. The true potential is in creating the 'jam experience' for beginners, and that's a far higher technical bar. "
