[workaround] 'Memory Violation' in PortAudio Initialization/Refresh

Affected users:  Windows only.  Only happens with certain audio hardware or drivers.

Symptoms:  imitone fails to start and reports an error mentioning a memory violation in PortAudio Initialization or

Cause:  imitone's audio subsystem has failed to initialize.

Status:  We're continuing to investigate causes of this problem, which are many.


Instructions:

Make sure you are running the latest version of imitone.

If you see an error report pop up, choose "Send Report" to let us know about it.  (You only need to do this once.)


Workaround Solution:

NOTE: currently these steps only work for imitone 0.9.1 and earlier.  We'll put together DLLs for 0.9.2 soon.

Windows users can replace imitone's portaudio_x86.dll file with one that includes fewer audio modes.
Usually, removing the mode that caused the problem will allow imitone to run.

The file to be replaced will be located at C:/Program Files (x86)/interactopia/imitone beta 0.9.x/portaudio_x86.dll

  • NOTE: the (x86) only applies to 64-bit versions of Windows.

  • NOTE: you'll need to do this for whatever version of imitone you are running.

portaudio_x86.dll for Windows Vista/7/8/10 (in order of general helpfulness)

portaudio_x86.dll for Windows XP


If this replacement fixes the problem for you, please post here and let me know!


TECHNICAL NOTES

imitone uses simplified names for its audio modes:

  • "basic" refers to WASAPI (shared mode) where available, and to MME otherwise.

  • "kernel" refers to WDM Kernel Streaming.

  • "asio" refers to Steinberg ASIO.

  • "directX" refers to Windows DirectSound, and is hidden when WASAPI is available.

  • "exclusive" refers to WASAPI (exclusive mode) and is always hidden.

Hidden audio modes may be made visible by setting the ini flag "imitone.filter_audio_modes" to 0.

The DLLs provided here are modified versions of PortAudio's October 2016 stable release.
imitone 0.9.0b and higher should be compatible with non-customized versions of the DLL.

So neither of the DLLs conclusively resolved the problem?  If that's the case, could you try the following:

- Disconnect as many audio / MIDI peripherals from your computer as you can.
- Close any other music software.
- Start imitone.

Let me know if that seems to affect startup.  If so, you might be able to bring things back one by one and see if there is something specific that breaks it.  (Such has happened before with EG. certain audio interfaces.)  In particular, I've had suspicions for a while about the ASIO layer I'm using in imitone, and I'm thinking I'll need to rewrite it.

Ok straight away after disconnecting the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface it works. Works with my USB interface but not in ASIO mode.

Sorry for the slow turnaround on this.  My suspicion is that some part of my software's audio drivers is failing to handle the large number of inputs and outputs on your interface.  in particular I'm suspicious of my ASIO-related code.

I'll be putting out a new version in a few weeks...  I may ask your help in further debugging, or possibly I might look into getting my hands on a Saffire to test this myself -- I've had many reports of issues with that series.

I pre ordered today so I could try out the beta.. But I also get Memory Violation' in plaid_portaudio::Driver::refresh

I followed all the steps above.. tried both .dll's and I don't have any audio connected to my computer...

Any more idea's?

I just bought imitone tonight and got the bug immediately, i tried loading the 2 dlls and it made no difference, i tried disconnecting my main usb devices to no avail. Logs attached:

Custom AMD build, AMD GPU. Samsung 850 Evo SSD, 20gb RAM

My interface is an older Infrasonic Quartet PCI card so i can't remove it easily. It's a fairly simple 2 I/O interface anyway. Please come with a fix Evan, would really like to try the imitone i've seen in the demos. How long before the next version?

I've just added a newer version of the portaudio DLL which includes debugging information:  http://imitone.com/support/portaudio/po … _debug.zip

Users who can't get things working with the alternate DLLs above should try copying the files in this zip folder into their imitone installation.  If the problem does not disappear, a more detailed error message should display --- and that will help me track down the root cause.
