A simple 'locked on note' mode

Hi Evan,

After a couple of days of testing, I have a request for your consideration for a simplified detection mode that would do the following:

1, Detect the initial tone being sung, and send the nearest in tune note as midi. So if an out of tune C is being sung, the software sends and straight in tune C note.
2, After the initial detection, there should be no change to the pitch or note for as long as the note is sustained, even if the the audio slides down or up across the octave.

The benefit would be for poor singers such as myself or those who for other reasons are unable to hold a constant tone within a note. Singing in tune but with certain frequencies of vibrato seems to throw the software right off as well, even with the vibrato mode switched on. The current best similar behaviour seems to cause a new note to be generated each time it detects you as going off the note. A mode that simply detects the note and holds it as long as there is sound not matter what the actual tone of the input would be very useful.

Please let me know if you would like further clarity on this request.

Many thanks,

Boroni

Re: A simple 'locked on note' mode

Hey, Boroni --

I've actually been planning out solutions to these problems for ages -- they should start appearing in version 0.8.2.  The one most similar to what you describe is called "hold mode" -- it will not change the note unless your voice "settles" on a new pitch.  I'm planning a potentially later function called "pitch guide" which should help a lot with slowly drifting pitch.  0.8.1 (later this week) makes vibrato stabilization somewhat more effective, which may also help.

The big problem with picking the note right at the beginning is that less-experienced singers often start each note with an incorrect pitch and correct themselves.  I've considered another mode called "twang", which would allow the note to change but only for a brief window of time after it began.  A third possibility I may also explore is a "composer mode" which will make imitone respond much more slowly and only when notes are clearly pronounced.  This would produce the cleanest output at the cost of feeling less like playing an instrument.

Let me know what you think of all this.

Re: A simple 'locked on note' mode

Ended up implementing "Lock Mode" in 0.8.1 as a stopgap for the coming "hold mode", which I expect to be more flexible and useful.  Let me know what you think.
