Collecting log and crash information

Oh no!  imitone crashed!?  Or it isn't opening.  Or perhaps it's doing something very strange, like showing a black screen.  No need to fear -- this handy guide will help you to collect evidence so we can get to the bottom of this mystery.

If you get stuck while following the guide, post a reply and I'll try to improve it.

  1. Find the log folder.
How this is done depends on the type of problem you have.

    1. If imitone does not open, and a folder appears:
Good news!  You found the log folder.  Proceed to step two.

    2. If you see a red screen with an error message:
You may press "V" (for "view") to make the folder appear.

    3. If the problem does not cause imitone to stop running:
Hit control-R (or command-R) in imitone to open the folder.

    4. If imitone opens and runs, but becomes unresponsive or stops suddenly after some time:
Open imitone again and press control-R (or cmd-R) to open the folder.

    5. If none of these apply, or you couldn't get the folder to open:
You'll need to find the folder manually.
On Mac OS X:  Click your desktop, hit shift+command+G and enter ~/Library/Application Support/com.interactopia.imitone
On Windows Vista, 7 and 8:  Click the start menu and type in %APPDATA%\com.interactopia.imitone and press enter.
On Windows XP:  Go to start -> run... and type in %APPDATA%\com.interactopia.imitone and press enter.

  2. Collect the log files.
Currently, useful files are log.txt and error.txtlog should always be present, and if it's missing that's an error in its own right.
Begin composing your error report.  For each file:

    • Open the attach files page on this forum.

    • Click and drag the file onto the "Choose File" button.

    • Click the "Upload File" button.

    • Copy the bolded code it gives you, and paste it into your report.

Screen-shots may be uploaded in the same fashion, and will show up as images in your report.
If the upload system does not work for you, pastebin is an alternate method for uploading text files.  Simply copy and paste the contents of a log file into the big box, click "submit" below, and copy the link from your browser's address bar for inclusion in your message.

  3. Be sure to mention your OS and imitone version.
This step will be redundant soon as I plan to include this information automatically.
For the time being, mentioning "Windows 7 / beta 0.5.1" or "OS X Lion / beta 0.6" in your report is very helpful.

Privacy note:  Log files will contain some information on your computer's hardware and settings, including your audio and graphics hardware, game controllers and MIDI devices, and your username on the computer.  If you are uncomfortable posting this information in public view, use the "Email" link under my photo to send error details directly instead.
